Voices from the bridge: The bridge seen from outside – episode III
A few weeks before the completion of the works and the inauguration of Genoa’s new bridge, the sense of anticipation in the city was tangible. Private citizens, business people and teachers from the schools nearest the construction site recall what the city had gone through in the previous two years and spoke of their expectations for the new Ponte San Giorgio.
Their eye-witness accounts were collected after the spectacular laying of the last stretch of the road deck, a ceremony in which the prime minister Giuseppe Conte also took part, and looked forward to the month of August 2020, when the bridge was due to be inaugurated.
The completion of the piers and the deck, the final length of which was 3,500 feet, heralded the last milestone of a major work.
